MTC Extra Info

Need to know something about MTC - we have all the information here in our FAQ.

Why has this happened?

Up until now, Momentum has done coaching and K&P has done competitive league matches. In recent months we have disagreed with their committee about what we think the athletes want. In particular we want to pay people to help run the club better and to offer more support at a wide range of local and national competitions than they currently do. They want to stick to using volunteers but cannot get enough of them. So we have decided to run our own club and try to give the athletes a better experience by being more professional.

What happens if I do nothing?

If you don’t want to compete, then nothing will change. You just carry training with Momentum and will have access to social events organised by Momentum, and if you decide to compete - competitions in the future. Eventually K&P will be able to offer some coaching; maybe for free it'll be cheaper, but will, even if the coaching is free, will still involve significant costs to use the track / facilities; and you can consider training with them if you want.

If you compete, then you can choose between one or other of the clubs or both to run for either club (or any other club). Momentum will continue, as always, to happily coach athletes from any club. Momentum Track Club (MTC) membership will be included in your training subs and will not rise any faster in 2025 than in previous years. We have had to increase prices primarily due to large increases in National Insurance payments to the government and a much larger than normal increase in the price we pay for the track - also imposed due to the NI increases from the government.

(For evening groups) Momentum subs in evening groups will remain at £225 for 3 months or £670 for a whole year until 1st July for current athletes and now include MTC membership. From 1st June for new members and 1st April for current members the new prices will be £260 / £745 respectively, rising by the same amount as previous years and now including MTC membership. As always this includes

  • - our professional experienced coaches
  • - use of the track (both in training sessions and any other time you wish to train)
  • - use of the gym any time the track is open (U16s have some restrictions)
  • - access to Natasha on training nights
  • - and now - membership of MTC, which you can choose to make first or second claim.

(For Kestrels) subs will rise by just 4-5% in 2025, a smaller rise to most years, and still includes all the professional coaching, use of the track, prizes and badges that can be won and now membership of MTC.

As always, we have a small hardship fund available for those experiencing financial difficulties as we aim to be fully inclusive for all athletes.

MTC will offer all many of the same leagues as K&P do now, including SAL, YDL Lower, Ebbisham, Lily B, Surrey XC and Downs League. The exceptions but we will add these in future years. If you choose to do the other leagues offered by other club, then you can join that club, whether K&P or any other, to compete in these as second claim members. Or you can do all of them with another club. You will still be able to train with Momentum either way and benefit from all the coaching and other benefits above.

Why should I join the new Club?

We are going to be doing the club thing differently. There will be a vest included for athletes, we'll have social events, improved social media and, most importantly, will be consulting regularly with the athlete about what you want. All the committee members will be well known to the athletes and ready to ensure the club is moving in the direction it's members want it to. We'll be providing support at open meetings, local and national championships and also hosting meetings, which will be offered at reduced prices to members. You will be free to join another club for meetings like NAL etc (either as 1st claim to them or Higher Claim Athlete (ask and we can explain the differences), but for many athletes we'll be able to provide all the meetings you need. There will also be prizes for those who do well in league matches, including cash prizes for top performers in the SAL.

It’s cheaper, overall. If you were to get paid coaching, use of a track and gym, access to a sport therapist and club membership separately, you'd normally be spending about £2000 a year. We will offer a vest as part of the joining process. We will have social events, better social media than that currently provided, we will listen more to what you want. We will hold open meetings to give you more chances to compete nearer home.

When should I join the new Club?

All athletes can immediately join MTC first claim - just contact any of our coaches / officials and they will assist. If you wish to move your first claim club to MTC, you can do this anytime - but spring is usually the best time to take advantage of the start of most clubs financial years when they'll ask for more money. There is also the cut off to be a Higher Claim athlete (HCA) for another club (eg K&P)

What’s the process?

All athletes who don't have clubs just ask and we'll join you up. Those with another club, please ask and we'll give you the details of what we are doing and help with what will be the best option for you. In many cases it will be first claim membership, but there will be athletes where second claim membership is better at this point - for example if you miss the HCA deadline and want to do NAL in a particular season.

Can I join now?

You can join any time you like. Momentum Track Club started taking in members on the 2nd January 2025 and already we have near 150 members in the first three months.
